Albany Beach House
Bahamas 2007
We were asked to design a new beach house at Albany, a prestigious development designed by Andres Duany in the Bahamas.
We took inspiration from French and English Caribbean architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Wide verandahs and breezeways provide shade and outdoor living rooms, contained under a white-painted roof with deeply projecting eaves.
The plan was in part derived in part from Henry Holland’s great ‘Marine Pavilion’ at Brighton, subsequently altered by Nash to form the Royal Pavilion. A double height domed great room forms the core of the house, and a giant doric order faces the Atlantic ocean.
